Every pharmaceutical company wants to maximize speed to market for a new drug product. One way to enable this is with a platform approach for the package and delivery systems – in other words, to use the same vial containment system and/or syringe system for multiple drug products. To use this approach effectively, component and system performance data is needed. Through the Integrated Solutions platform, West is ideally positioned to provide this data.
Our Integrated Solutions program brings together West’s primary packaging, device, analytical, regulatory and contract manufacturing expertise in a single-source solution. West can help you Simplify the Journey™ at any stage of drug development. Learn more by visiting our Integrated Solutions Program page or contact a technical representative today for additional support and guidance.
The first thought that you may have when you hear the word “rubber” is natural rubber – a poly-isoprene-based polymer, which has as its origination the latex fluid drawn from rubber trees (most prominently in Indonesia and Malaysia). Although natural rubber has been used in the past for pharmaceutical applications, potential issues with latex allergies resultant from proteins from the original latex, have led to the almost complete adoption of synthetic rubber.<br />
Container systems must protect parenteral drug products through the entire shelf life. To accomplish this, container components (vial, elastomer stopper, and metal seal) must fit together well, and maintain an impervious seal. In a sealed system, elastomers are under compression, and it is well known that under compression they undergo relaxation. This raises the question whether such relaxation will affect the seal performance over time, and thus container closure integrity (CCI).
Cell-based therapies have emerged as a revolutionary approach in the field of regenerative medicine and as an anti-cancer therapeutic modality, offering potential treatments for a range of diseases. As the demand for cell-based therapies continues to grow, it is crucial to explore the current and future fill-finish packaging strategies to ensure the safety, efficacy, and accessibility of these therapies. Understanding the advantages and challenges associated with different modes for cell therapy packaging will allow drug manufacturers to choose a suitable system.
